Back to the Basics of Selling on Ebay
Sunday, 01 February 2009 14:50

Ebay is the biggest auction network on the internet.  There can be lots of money to be made on Ebay if you do your homework about what you sell and who you are selling to. I plan to give you some very important information that most people might not realize until its to late. I could be like others and try to get you to buy this knowledge, but if your like me I still have hope that some things should be free.  I don't believe you should have to pay to educate yourself. So this is why I offer you my past experience of working on Ebay and Paypal for FREE!!

The basics:

  • Do research on your item----buyers want as much information as possible, give a detailed description on your item such as any imperfections, works properly, age of the item, etc. If you don't know much about it you could always google it.
  • Take quality pictures of your item----the more pictures you have the better. Buyers like to know what they are buying. It does cost a little extra, but it could also mean more money in your pocket. When taking pictures it helps to have a solid background. Try to use a contrast color to make your item stand out.
  • Be honest---never lie or exaggerate about your item.  You want return customers and positive feedback. Just as with any other online business, word of mouth is how you will make money.

Acceptable payment---there are many options to recieve payment. Paypal, check, money order, or cashiers check. With each option there are positives and negatives for using these payment methods, both on your end and buyers end. Each seller will have there prefences on which method suits them the best. I have given a few of the major positives and negatives about these methods.

PAYPAL
POSITIVES: a very secure website, fast and easy payment, paperless
NEGATIVES: seller fees (determined on how much money you receive),
CHECK
POSITIVES: recieve payment before sending item, you have documentation of purchase
NEGATIVES: you have to wait to receive check in the mail, you have to check periodically to see if check clears it can take anywhere from 3-10   days, you also will have to make many trips to the bank to deposit checks (you could state that you only make deposits on certain days of the week) to save time and gas.
MONEY ORDER
POSITIVES: just like receiving cash, no wait on anything to clear you can cash it at your bank
NEGATIVES: like a check you also have to wait to receive it in the mail, some buyers do not like sending them because they are hard to trace or replace if it is lost in the mail
CASHIERS CHECK
To be honest, I do not know much about cashiers checks.  Most people do not send these. Banks charge buyers for these, so most people just tend to send a personal check or money order.
  • Insurance requirement---in the item description, let them know that you require them to purchase insurance. Make it bold so you can't miss it! Insurance does not cost much and it saves everybody a headache.  You need to cover yourself in every instance so you are not paying out of your pocket for a mistake by the U.S.P.S.,Fedex or UPS, etc.

  • Shipping---You could include the insurance and shipping together. U.S.P.S (united states post office) offers a calculator to help you determine the weight and postage of your item on their website.  I do recommend buying a scale to determine the weight of your item.Be sure to prepackage your item before weighing it (put item in the box with your filler and weigh it). You could also use a standard flat rate for your item, but I only recommend this after some experience with shipping.( Below are some negative of using flat rate shipping)
  1. If you just estimate on shipping without having actually shipped out a similar size package you could end up paying more than you charged.
  2. Some buyers will not purchase items without an actual shipping cost.

  • Pricing---if you would like to get a certain amount on your item, be sure to set a reserve price. In an auction, you don't know exactly how much you will get till the end. I do recommend starting the bid out as minimal as possible. Buyers like to think they can get an item for nothing.
These are the basic and required fields to list your item on ebay. There are other categories and subcategories to make your listing stand out, but remember they also cost more money.  If I were to list an item I would rather spend more money adding multiple pictures, then to put a layout on the item. You are trying to sell the item not the layout.  Try to not spend that much on listing, because in the case that your item does not sell you  won't have spent alot of money to sell it. Check back soon for more articles about Ebay. I hope this information was very helpful with your venture in selling with Ebay.  If you have any questions that I might have not answered feel free to email me!
